Gary Stanek is the Executive Director of The Stamford Counseling Center, Inc. He has been with the Center since 1988, when he started as an intern. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who works with families, couples, children, adolescents, and individual adults.
Gary also works with high conflict couples and their attorneys, and runs workshops on sexual abuse recovery, stepfamily issues and parent empowerment. Gary is trained in EMDR and specializes in treating Post Tramatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Gary has always been active in the community — as an English teacher, a student newspaper advisor, a theater director, a crisis center hot-line volunteer, and as an Adjunct Professor at local universities teaching psychology to undergraduates at Norwalk Community College and to graduate students in Education at Sacred Heart University.
Gary authored a monthly parenting column in the Stamford Advocate, Greenwich Time and Connecticut Post for over 12 years.
Gary has two daughters and a stepson. He lives in Stamford with his wife, Karen Mazarin-Stanek, also a Marriage and Family Therapist here at the Center.
Gary and Karen can be found doing co-therapy with couples on any given evening at the Center. Gary tells us, “Having both genders in the room when working with partners on relationship issues is so very powerful and valuable. I can’t speak for Karen, but of all the work we do, I love the marital co-therapy best. We work well together as a team in helping couples grow a healthy relationship.”
