Harvey M. Weitzel, D Min

Rev. Dr. Harvey Weitzel has been working in the mental health field as a pastoral counselor for the past 42 years. He started his counseling career in pastoral psychotherapist as an extended staff member of the Lutheran Social Services of Eastern Pennsylvania while serving as a parish pastor. Since 1971 he has provided individuals, couples, and families with effective and compassionate counseling from a uniquely pastoral prospective.

Harv is an ordained Lutheran minister who practices pastoral psychotherapy in a way which integrates religious resources with insights from the behavioral sciences.

He utilizes approaches and principles derived from the disciplines of theology and psychology in working with individuals, couples, families, and groups toward the achievement of wholeness and health in one’s life. He views the merging of these two disciplines as applying complementary therapeutic approaches and techniques, to overcome long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

While one can’t change difficult situation of the past, client and therapist can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in one’s life. If you’re looking for extra support and guidance through a challenging situation or you’re just ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals.

As a solution-focused therapist, his goal is to help others uncover their true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating.

Harvey received his Doctorate of Ministry degree in clinical Pastoral Counseling from Drew University. He has also had schooling in Clinical Pastoral Education. And, he has received post graduate training in individual therapy from the Lehigh Valley Pastoral institute in Gestalt therapy. Moreover, Harv has received post graduate training in couples and family counseling from the Life Innovations Institute of Minneapolis as well as the Alban Institute. A member of the American Counseling Association, he has served on the Board of Director’s for two Pennsylvania hospitals before moving to Connecticut.

After almost four decades of parish ministry and serving as an extended staff member for several Lutheran social agencies in eastern Pennsylvania, Harv moved to Connecticut to accept a specialized call to St James’ Episcopal Church in Manhattan, New York. In August of 2007 he joined the staff of the Stamford Counseling Center. In August 2012 he accepted a part-time call to Zion Lutheran Church Stamford as the transitional minister.

Because of his concern for the growing rate of divorce in our society, Harv’s Doctorial Dissertation dealt with the need for a new and more informative approach to pre-martial counseling. His clinical specialties are individual, couple and family therapy, pre marital and marital counseling, parenting skills development, and grief counseling as well as helping individuals cope with anxiety, depression, relationship, and life transition issues. Working to identify self-defeating patterns and thought-processes and implement what is needed to move forward is the goal of growth counseling. Harv’s approach is straightforward, strength-based and solution oriented based in pastoral counseling. Harv has offices in Stamford, New Canaan, and Norwalk CT.
